Pierre Loti: Essential 5 Hill Checks

Travel Tips in Istanbul 👁️ 39

Pierre Loti is a free Eyup viewpoint, not a palace. Winter cable car 08:00 to 22:00, about a 3-minute ride. Five hill checks before you book the hour.

Pierre Loti is the free Golden Horn viewpoint in Eyup, and these are the essential five hill checks before anyone treats the tea terrace as a palace. The cable car is public line TF2. The ride is about three minutes. From 1 October 2026 the winter board is 08:00 to 22:00, and a weekend queue can take longer than the cabin. Pay with an Istanbulkart. Cabins hold about eight, so a party of six splits. Budget 60 minutes for the rail, and 45 more only if you also enter the mosque below. The hill is not on the morning, standard, or deluxe day.

Pierre Loti is a Golden Horn viewpoint in Eyup, not a palace and not a stop on the Sultanahmet voucher. The terrace itself is free. The cable car that climbs to it is a public line, TF2, and the ride is about three minutes. From 1 October 2026 the winter board is 08:00 to 22:00. A clear weekend queue can take longer than the cabin. We walk this as a licensed Istanbul operator, TÜRSAB 16602. These are the five hill checks we write on the Build Your Own Istanbul Tour planner before anyone calls a tea garden a second Topkapi.

Pierre Loti checks before you leave the square

Eyup sits on the Golden Horn, inland from the square. From a Sultanahmet hotel it is about 7 km and 25 to 40 minutes in a private car, longer if the shore road is jammed. It is not a walk from Hagia Sophia. The van drops near the mosque. The hill is above that drop. You either ride TF2 or you walk the cemetery paths. Both end at the same rail and the same water.

This is a different hill from Suleymaniye. That mosque is the terrace over the same horn, closer to Eminonu, with four minarets and a prayer hall. Its clocks are already on Suleymaniye Mosque. Do not send the driver to “the view” and accept whichever dome appears. Pierre Loti is the cypress ridge and the tea tables. Suleymaniye is the imperial mosque. Name one.

Five hill checks

Check Do this Skip this
1. The place Eyup, above the mosque, Golden Horn rail A palace ticket, or the Suleymaniye terrace
2. The hours Winter board 08:00 to 22:00. Recheck Metro Istanbul Assuming the cabin runs through maintenance
3. The ride About 3 minutes. Istanbulkart. Cabins of about eight A group of six insisting on one cabin
4. The clock About 60 minutes for the view if the line is short Mosque plus tea plus tombs inside that same hour
5. The voucher Its own block. Not morning, standard, or deluxe A photo of this rail pasted onto a Balat day

The board we use is the Metro Istanbul TF2 page. Summer hours on that page run later, to 23:00. Winter, in force from 1 October 2026, stops at 22:00. Maintenance can pull the line for a morning even inside those hours. If the cabin is dark, the walk is the plan, not a complaint at the station door.

The three-minute ride

TF2 is short on purpose. About 420 metres, two stations, a few minutes in the air over the cypresses and the cemetery. The lower station is a short walk from the Eyup mosque side. The upper station puts you by the tea garden. You are not crossing the city. You are skipping a hill.

Pay with an Istanbulkart, the same card as the tram. Do not build the hour around cash at the gate. A party of six will not fit one cabin. The cars carry about eight, and the line pairs strangers. Split, ride, meet at the top rail. Children stay with an adult in the cabin. A stroller day is a poor fit for the walk and a tight fit for the cabin. If someone in the group cannot stand a queue, go on a weekday morning, not a clear Sunday at 16:00.

The queue is the clock. On a bright weekend the wait can pass twenty minutes while the ride stays three. Tell the driver the truth: sixty minutes if the line is kind, ninety if it is not. A pickup promised at forty minutes past the drop is how you abandon the terrace or abandon the car.

The view, then the mosque

The viewpoint does not require the mosque, and the mosque does not require the viewpoint. Eyup Sultan is a working pilgrimage mosque below the hill. Shoulders and knees covered, women with a scarf, shoes off, voices low. Prayer pauses the interior the way it does at any Istanbul mosque. Forty-five minutes is a respectful visit when the hall is open. It is not a bonus you fold into the cable-car hour.

Do the view first if the light is the point, and the mosque after if the group still has legs and the right clothes. Do the mosque first if you are early and the cable-car queue is already folded around the station. Do not do both, plus tea, plus the cemetery walk, and call it a gap between Hagia Sophia and lunch. Tea at the top is the pleasant extra. It is also how an hour becomes two. One glass, then down.

The cemetery paths are the walk when the cabin stops. They are uphill, uneven, and lined with graves. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes if you are fit and not in new shoes. Not a stroller route. Not a shortcut you invent at dusk without a light. The same shoe and scarf logic is on what to pack for Istanbul.

Sixty minutes, if the line moves

Sixty minutes is drop, ride or walk, terrace, one tea if you are early, ride or walk down, back at the van. It assumes the winter line is running and the queue is ordinary. Add the mosque only as a second block, and tell us before the morning, not at the rail. The tombs and the market lanes around the mosque are a third block. Leave them for a day that is already in Eyup.

Wind on the terrace is colder than the square, including in October. A layer you can put on at the top beats a scarf bought for the photo. The rail is the photo. The horn, the bridges, the far mosques. You do not need a drone and you do not need a ticket for that frame.

Why deluxe does not hold this hill

Morning from €125 stays on the square until about 13:00. Standard from €230 is that ridge plus Topkapi, lunch, and the Grand Bazaar when the bazaar is open: the standard full day from €230. Deluxe from €290 still ends on one finale, a Bosphorus cruise or a Balat walk, and that finale is the deluxe full day from €290. None of those clocks is Pierre Loti.

If a page puts this tea garden on the deluxe afternoon, it has renamed Balat. Add the hill on its own, on a morning that is not already carrying Topkapi. Four nights can hold the square, one horn view, and still leave a bazaar. That order is the Istanbul 4 day itinerary. The first hotel night, before any hill, is first day in Istanbul.

Common questions

Is Pierre Loti a palace?

No. It is a viewpoint and a tea terrace above Eyup. There is no palace ticket. The cable car is a city line, not a museum entry.

What time does the cable car stop?

On the winter board, 22:00, after the 1 October 2026 change. Summer on the same Metro page runs to 23:00. Recheck TF2 the week you fly. A maintenance notice can close a morning inside those hours.

How long is the ride?

About three minutes. The wait in front of it is the variable. Weekday morning is kinder than a clear Sunday afternoon.

Can you skip the cable car?

Yes. The view is at the top either way. The walk is a cemetery path, uphill, about fifteen to twenty-five minutes if you are fit. It is the plan when the cabin is stopped.

Does the hour include the mosque?

No. The mosque is below, a separate respectful visit of about forty-five minutes when prayer allows. Stacking it into the viewpoint hour is how both end rushed.

Is it on the deluxe day?

No. Deluxe holds a cruise or Balat after the ridge. This hill is its own block. Say Eyup when you book, not “the view.”

How do you get there from Sultanahmet?

Private car, about 7 km and 25 to 40 minutes. We drop at the mosque side and wait for the hour you set. Do not try to walk it from the square between two timed tickets.

Book the inbound before you fly: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet, fixed €45, six passengers, six bags, IST Gate 9, CEO 34. SAW is €65 at pillar 10. A 14:00 landing is a hotel, not a same-hour hill. Partner inbound, then one car: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet. The return sits with it: Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport. Cable clocks on the partner brand: Hagia cable clocks. Close on the Build Your Own Istanbul Tour planner with the square day, this hill on its own morning, and the Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet car already named. Outbound stays Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport. That is Pierre Loti with the queue and the mosque kept apart.
