Buy Passo or the counter on yerebatan.com. Day is 09:00 to 18:30. Night is 19:30 to 22:00. The gap between is closed. Basilica Cistern Essential 5 visit checks: 40 minutes, Tuesday Plan B, not the palace
Basilica Cistern visits fail when you treat Yerebatan as a cheap Topkapı substitute, or as a Ministry of Culture museum with a Museum Pass. It is a separate operator, a forty-minute walk on water, and the ticket we swap in on a Tuesday when the palace is shut. We walk it every week as a licensed Istanbul operator, TÜRSAB 16602. This page is the five visit checks we write before you queue: who sells the paper, how long you actually stand below street level, which session you bought, when it replaces the palace on our products, and which IST run to lock so the stairs are not your first argument after a flight.
Closed-palace logic for the whole Tuesday sits on Istanbul on Tuesday. Keep this page for the cistern itself. Partner night-count without this interior is how many days in Istanbul. Confirm one brand. Do not hold two live carts.
Forty minutes, not a palace

The cistern is about 150 metres from Hagia Sophia, down Yerebatan Caddesi. You go below the square. 336 columns stand in water. Two Medusa bases sit at the far end. That walk, at an honest pace with photos, is about forty minutes. Topkapı with the Harem is about 165. We do not pretend they are the same visit. If you have an open-day palace morning, keep the palace. If Tuesday closed the palace, this is the Plan B interior, not a refund conversation.
Do not stack the cistern and the Harem on a half day. That is how lunch becomes 16:00. On four nights you can split heavy doors. That split is already live: Istanbul 4 day itinerary. On two nights you pick one heavy interior. That cut is Istanbul 2 day itinerary.
Basilica Cistern: the five visit checks
Print the table. If a listing sells you a Museum Pass entry, or a night ticket for a 10:00 walk, it is the wrong paper.
| Check | What you do | What you still cut |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Who sells the ticket | Official visit info on yerebatan.com, then Passo or the counter | A street QR, a Museum Pass swipe, a ministry desk |
| 2. Forty minutes | One interior. Photos at the Medusa bases. Back to the square | Treating it as a 165-minute palace |
| 3. Two sessions | Day 09:00 to 18:30. Night 19:30 to 22:00. The site is closed to visitors 18:30 to 19:30 | One ticket for both windows |
| 4. Tuesday Plan B | On afternoon, standard and deluxe, the palace ticket becomes the cistern ticket at no extra fee | Arguing for a discount at a closed Topkapı gate |
| 5. IST doors first | IST to Sultanahmet and Sultanahmet to IST booked before you fly | A 14:00 landing and a same-day day-session fantasy |
Those five are a Basilica Cistern visit as we sell it. Everything below is why the operator is not the ministry, and which Colina clock already holds the paper.
Not a ministry museum
Kültür AŞ runs the cistern for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The institution says it is not affiliated with the Ministry of Culture. Museum Pass Istanbul does not cover this door. Hagia Sophia gallery tickets still sit on the ministry side. Confirm that gallery note on muze.gov.tr when you are buying the other interior. For the cistern, start at the official visit page and buy through Passo or the museum counter. Kültür AŞ says it is not responsible for tickets from anywhere else. Do not pay a reseller for a PDF that is not Passo.
Prices move. We do not lock a lira figure on this page. The official visit info currently splits a daytime ticket and a higher Night Shift ticket. Visitors under 7 are listed as free. Turkish citizens 65 and over are listed as free. Student discounts are for Turkish students and international students studying in Turkey, not for every ISIC card at the kerb. Card or İstanbulkart at the door. Confirm the week you fly.
Day session, night session, the gap between
The published museum day is 09:00 to 22:00, but that is two products with a gap. Daytime is 09:00 to 18:30. Night Shift is 19:30 to 22:00. Between 18:30 and 19:30 the site is closed to visitors while they change the session. A daytime ticket does not walk you into Night Shift. A night ticket does not walk you in at 10:00. If you want the columns in daylight with a guide, you want the day window. If you want the evening lighting, that is a different paper and it is not how we run the Tuesday Plan B.
Our afternoon half-day is 13:00 to 17:00. That sits inside the day session. Standard and deluxe finish before Night Shift. Do not add a 19:30 cistern onto a 17:00 drop and call it the same product. A three-night stay that still has to choose water or hill after this square is Istanbul 3 day itinerary.

Tuesday Plan B on a Colina clock
Topkapı is closed Tuesday. The cistern is not. On products that already include the palace ticket, Tuesday is not a discount. The combined palace ticket is replaced by the Basilica Cistern ticket at no extra fee. We add Süleymaniye or Gülhane so the hours still stand up. You do not buy the cistern at the door on that booking. You do not argue with the guide about a closed gate we already knew about. The full closed-day map is Istanbul on Tuesday.
If you built the day yourself on the Build Your Own Istanbul Tour planner, do not tick Topkapı on a Tuesday cart. Tick the cistern. Watch the minutes. Forty plus the gallery is a morning. Forty plus the Harem is a mistake. Partner sequencing for a built day is how to plan a private Istanbul tour.
Which product already holds the ticket
Tick one heavy interior. The cistern is the light one.
| Hours | Product | What it holds of the cistern |
|---|---|---|
| 08:00 to 13:00 | Morning half-day from €125 | Ridge doors. No palace, so no cistern swap. Meet in Sultanahmet, no Vito |
| 13:00 to 17:00 | Afternoon half-day from €165 | Gallery plus Topkapı, or cistern on Tuesday. No hotel transfer |
| 09:00 to 17:00 | Standard full-day from €230 | Vito, lunch, both major tickets with the cistern swap on Tuesday, bazaar while open |
| 09:00 to 18:30 | Deluxe full-day from €290 | Same swap, then one finale: Bosphorus or Balat. Not Night Shift |
Children 0 to 5 join the tour free. Ages 6 to 11 pay half. Minimum two adults. Guides work in English, Spanish or Russian. The guide fee is fixed for the booking, not per head. The money line is Istanbul private tour cost. A ready one-day sequence on the partner brand is Istanbul in one day. Extra-night clocks that already mention this swap live on Hagia as Istanbul 4 day itinerary.
Book the IST doors before the stairs
A day session does not start at Yerebatan Caddesi if you landed at 14:00. Istanbul Airport is 48 km and 45 to 60 minutes from Sultanahmet. Sabiha Gökçen is 65 km and 75 to 95. Landing to a key is two and a half to three hours from IST. A 10:00 IST arrival can still make the afternoon cistern. A 13:00 arrival is an evening square walk. Night Shift at 19:30 is only realistic if you are already in the hotel with bags down. Do not buy a day ticket for a 16:00 landing.
Book the inbound before you fly: Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet, private Mercedes Vito, six passengers, six bags, published at a fixed €45 for the vehicle. SAW is the longer twin at a fixed €65. Meet at IST Gate 9, CEO 34 on the pole, or SAW pillar 10, same sign. Child seats on the form. Compare Hagia’s Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet twin, then confirm one inbound. The kerb-to-key walk is first day in Istanbul. The square-only night on the partner brand is first evening in Sultanahmet.
Book the return with the inbound: Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport. A 16:00 IST ticket is a midday pickup. There is no cistern that morning. Compare Hagia Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport, then confirm one car. Pickup windows we use sit in how early to leave for Istanbul Airport.
Book the three pieces so the stairs are already solved: Colina Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet, the tour planner with the cistern ticked instead of the palace on a Tuesday, and Colina Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport. That is a Basilica Cistern morning with the doors and the forty minutes on the same sitting.

Common questions
Is this the same as Topkapı?
No. Forty minutes on water versus about 165 in the palace. Tuesday closes the palace. It does not close the cistern.
Does Museum Pass cover it?
No. It is not a Ministry of Culture museum. Buy Passo or the counter. Confirm on yerebatan.com.
Can I use a day ticket at night?
No. Day 09:00 to 18:30. Night 19:30 to 22:00. The gap 18:30 to 19:30 is closed to visitors.
What happens on a Tuesday Colina tour?
On afternoon, standard and deluxe the palace ticket becomes the cistern ticket at no extra fee. That is Plan B, not a refund. Live map: Istanbul on Tuesday.
Does the morning half-day include it?
No. Morning holds the ridge, not the palace, so there is nothing to swap. Add the cistern on the planner if you want it that morning.
How far is it from the square?
About 150 metres down Yerebatan Caddesi. The van stays on the street. You walk the stairs.
Which transfers do I book?
Both legs before you fly. IST to Sultanahmet and Sultanahmet to IST. Compare Hagia, then confirm one per leg.
Where do I build the minutes?
On the Build Your Own Istanbul Tour planner. Tick the cistern, not Topkapı, on a Tuesday. Watch the total.
